Why sustainability?

In the framework of the European Green Deal, the European poultry meat sector supports the Farm to Fork Strategy, striving to build a healthier and more sustainable European food system. The European umbrella association AVEC (Association of European Poultry Processors and Poultry Trade) and its national partners BVG (Germany), CIPC (France) and Avianza (Spain) are strengthening their commitment within the three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social, and economic.

Their aim is to ensure that Europeans have healthy, affordable, and sustainable food; to fight global warming; to protect the environment and preserve biodiversity; to achieve a fair economic return in the food chain; and to offer a diversity of choice to the consumer from conventional to organic production.

Environmental Sustainability

#YourPlanetYourRules

The European poultry sector contributes to preserving natural resources, reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions (gases in the atmosphere that absorb and re-emit heat, keeping the planet’s atmosphere warmer) and providing safe, affordable and quality poultry meat to consumers.

Over the years, increasingly cleaner and more responsible production systems have been developed to protect  our planter and the environment.

In terms of environmental sustainability, European poultry is the meat with lowest levels of mission intensity, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

This is achieved through development of more efficient feed production, investment in new technologies to modernise production methods, avoiding deforestation risks and having a shorter supply chain methods.

In this way, the sector seeks to improve its impact on natural resources with consumption limiting methods.

Poultry meat is rich in protein and other nutrients that provide us with energy for our daily lives, contributing to a varied and balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Moreover, poultry is the most consumed meat in the world, thanks to its high versatility and affordable price.

But these are not the only aspects of European poultry linked to the social aspect of sustainability.

European Union standards are among the highest in the world, thanks to the fact they  comply with strict EU regulations, as well as  the sector’s own effort to continuously improve production conditions throughout the production chain from Farm to Fork, which is having a positive impact on the quality of meat.

This means that, in order to provide a nutritious and affordable product, the poultry sector commits to topics like animal health and welfare, as well as the reduction of the use of antibiotics.

Our commitment to social sustainability also includes fighting against food waste, ensuring food security  through sufficient levels of production to feed European citizens and the world population with quality poultry meat, as a nutritious and versatile product fitting a balanced diet.

European poultry farmers aim to produce affordable quality meat by avoiding any waste. The current poultry production through modern technology minimizes the waste and exploits it in other sectors.

Did you know that 370 000 people in the EU make a direct living from the poultry sector?

While continuously looking to improve their impact on natural resources by developing techniques and methods of production that reduce their consumption, European poultry farmers aim to produce affordable quality meat by avoiding any waste.

This means that, in economic terms, European poultry’s sustainability  a source of employment for over 300,000 families in the EU, while boosting economy and work in rural areas and gender equality in a sector that counts more female workers each year.

Besides, as a highly consumed and appreciated product for its affordability, it helps create and strengthen trading links and opportunities while committing to greener production methods and less economic waste, incorporating circular economy methods and value to all parts of the animal to minimise waste. This means that edible parts of poultry can be given a good use for consumption, but also finding a way not to waste other parts of the animal (feathers, manure) and give these by-products a use in other sectors.
