Frequently Asked Questions

We say that something is environmentally sustainable when its continuity over time does not compromise flora and fauna, as well as all the natural elements that surround us (such as water or landscapes). The European poultry sector is making efforts to produce meat in a climate-smart way, by lowering its carbon footprint, preserving natural resources, and reducing waste.

We say that something is socially sustainable when it is respectful of society, animals and cares about welfare and health. That’s why social sustainability relates to food security, animal welfare, nutritional benefits and affordability of food products. The European poultry sector has the strictest animal welfare and food safety policies in the world, offering a nutritious and quality product to consumers.

We say that something is economically sustainable when its continuity over time does not compromise the economic development of rural areas and cities as well as the employment of their inhabitants. The European poultry sector contributes to a circular economy in which everyone (men and women, rural areas and cities) has equal opportunities for a prosperous future.

Poultry meat is naturally high in protein and  contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass and normal bones. According to the Food-Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDGs), white meat is recommended in all Member States as part of a healthy and balanced diet, alternatively with fish, eggs and plant-based food. Poultry meat also supplies the body with important vitamins and minerals, particularly the B group vitamins, such as B3, B6 and 12.

The European origin of the meat is a proof of quality. No matter which European country the poultry meat comes from, consumers can always rely on food safety, environmental protection, and animal welfare.

If you buy pre-packaged meat from a supermarket or shop, check the origin label and see if it comes from an EU country. If you buy meat in a butchery, ask staff about the origin of the poultry meat. Once you know that it comes from the EU, you can be sure that it is sustainable.
