SUSTAINABILITY

Why economic sustainability matters

Economic sustainability, together with social and environmental sustainability, are the center of the strategy that the whole European poultry sector is continuously implementing to ensure the wellbeing of #ourplanet, #ourfood and #ourmoney.

While continuously looking to improve their impact on natural resources by developing techniques and methods of production that reduce their consumption, European poultry farmers aim to produce affordable quality meat by avoiding any waste.

When discussing the economic aspects of sustainability, we refer to:

  • Source of employment for thousands of families
Around 370,000 people in the European Union are currently making a direct living from the poultry sector. Poultry is produced in the EU in more than 25,000 family farms, and companies are happy to defend this type of farming. This work  must be supported by continuous specialists and exporters, ie. engineers, transport crew, and veterinarians, in order to keep up with the latest improvements of the sector and needs of the animals.
  • Boosting the rural areas and the gender equality
The European poultry meat sector strengthens local communities by creating direct and indirect jobs in rural areas, with more presence from female farmers and workers. As well as  direct and indirect jobs, the poultry community is important to maintain schools, shops and rural life in areas that are often confronted with rural exodus.
  • Affordability and appreciation of poultry meat
The growing popularity of quality European poultry meat across the world is creating new opportunities for our producers to strengthen our trade links and secure new markets. Besides, thanks to the affordability and choice of the product, each EU citizen eats on average 23.5kg of poultry meat per year, and poultry meat consumption is expected to grow by 4.7 % by 2030.
  • Greener production methods reduce economic waste
Continuous innovation and improvements on-field, as well as compliance with demanding European standards, result in less economic waste while still delivering a quality and affordable product.
  • Circular economy and value to all parts of the animal
Sustainable poultry production through modern technology and a low carbon footprint minimise waste. In fact, poultry by-products such as feathers, manure and blood can be utilised in other sectors as fertilisers, feed, and components of pet food.

Economic sustainability, together with social and environmental sustainability, are the center of the strategy that the whole European poultry sector is continuously implementing to ensure the wellbeing of #ourplanet, #ourfood and #ourmoney.

All agents involved from farm to fork, meaning involving everyone in the supply chain, are aware of the long-term positive effects that sustainable agriculture has on our lives. This is why the sector is betting on a prosperous economic future for both those who make a living from the sector and consumers.

The value that EU poultry adds to the table

370.000 people in the EU are directly and positively impacted by the poultry sector and the employment that it generates. Not only is this number significant but also the number of many others who indirectly also make a living from the poultry sector. Its contribution to the growth and economic development of many European communities is proven also in rural areas, where the livelihood and sustainable progress of many local farmers is secured thanks the poultry industry.

Investing in technology as a sustainability measure? Yes! The investments made by the sector in advanced and greener production methods have already resulted in a reduction of economic waste. The simplest result: an increasingly cleaner and more animal and consumer-friendly production levels.

We say NO to food waste!

EU poultry contributes positively to the development of a circular economic by using all parts of our animals. By-products are those parts of poultry that remain after they are treated for edible purposes. Those by-products have a significant nutrient value and great quality and protein composition making them a great resource for animal feed, fertilizers, gelatin sources and many more.
